CHARAR-E-SHARIEF, OCTOBER 30: The annual Urs of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (RA), also known as ‘Sheikh-ul-Aalam’, ‘Alamdar-e-Kashmir’ and ‘Nund Reshi’, was observed with traditional fervour today at Chrar-e-Sharief shrine in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Devotees remained engaged in ‘Shab Khwani’ – nightlong prayers at the Chrar-e-Sharief shrine of the Sufi saint till today morning. A large number of devotees paid obeisance at the shrine throughout the day as well.
“The Urs was observed with traditional fervour. A large number of devotees from all over Kashmir paid obeisance at the shrine,” a devotee said.
Pertinently, Sheikh-ul-Aalam (RA) who was born in the 14th century, is revered as the ‘patron saint’ of Kashmir valley and devotees cutting across religious lines pay obeisance at his shrine. His poetry is popular as ‘Shrukhs’ through which he preached the message of spirituality.
It is pertinent to mention that the cherished annual Poshak Bandi ritual, marking the ceremonial redressing of Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (RA)’s grave, was observed at Charar-i-Sharief on Monday.
Poshak Bandi carries deep spiritual meaning, symbolizing respect and the ongoing bond between devotees and the saint. During the ceremony, caretakers gently lay a new, beautifully adorned cloth over the grave, a tradition that reflects reverence, devotion, and the perpetuation of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani’s legacy. Selected with care each year, the cloth is often adorned with intricate patterns and calligraphy, symbolizing the followers’ love and respect.
In a display of devotion, large crowds of followers gathered to witness and take part in the sacred event, seeking blessings and honoring the saint’s teachings. The atmosphere was imbued with spiritual warmth as special prayers, chants, and hymns filled the air, creating a profound sense of peace and devotion.
