Srinagar, Feb 22: Two militants were killed in a gunfight at Warpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.
Reports said that army’s 22 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off Warpora area at around 2:35 pm on Thursday.
The gunfight broke out late Thursday night after the forces intensified searches and fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot.
A police spokesperson said that based on a credible input about the presence of militants in Warpora area, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police and security forces in the area.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight, he said.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the encounter site. Their identities and affiliations are being ascertained, the spokesperson said.
“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted near the encounter site between forces and youth following the encounter.
Authorities have suspended internet services in Sopore and its adjoining areas since Thursday.
