Tral gunfight: Slain militants involved in sniper attacks, says Police

Srinagar, Oct 31: Police on Wednesday said the two militants killed in a gunfight in Tral on Tuesday were involved in a “series of attacks on the forces from a distance”.

“Apropos our earlier press release regarding Tral encounter it is further informed that the dead bodies of the two militants were recovered from the site of encounter along with arms and ammunition including M4 and AK 47 rifles and other incriminating materials,” said police spokesman in a statement.

“The slain militants have been identified, as Showkat Ahmad Khan resident of Handoora Tral while the other one is Usman from Pakistan,” he said.

“They were affiliated with proscribed militant outfit JeM and the same group was involved in a series of attacks and firing on the security forces’ camp from a distance, in recent times. They were also involved in many other civilian atrocities in the area,” a police spokesman said.

The police investigation has started.

“Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any,” the police spokesman said.
