Traders appeal for physical Eid shopping amid sales ‘slump’

SRINAGAR: Amid the peak in tourism, local traders and shopkeepers are complaining of depressed sales ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha festival.

The Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) has expressed dismay over the ‘stagnant’ market conditions ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha festival. KTA President, Aijaz Shahdhar, highlighted the severe impact this downturn is having on the local economy, with general trade activities grinding to a halt.

“Even with tourism at its peak, our markets are witnessing a drastic reduction in sales turnover,” lamented Shahdhar. “The purchasing power of the people has significantly weakened, and the convenience of online shopping has further exacerbated the decline in market sales.”

He claimed that local businesses, which rely heavily on the festive season for a significant portion of their annual income, are struggling to stay afloat.

“The surge in online shopping, which offers the convenience of home delivery and competitive pricing, has drawn many consumers away from physical stores. This shift in consumer behavior, accelerated by the pandemic, poses a significant challenge for traditional brick-and-mortar establishments,” he added.

In an earnest appeal to the community, Shahdhar urged people to support local businesses by choosing to shop in person. “We understand the appeal of online shopping, but it’s vital for the health of our local economy that people make their purchases physically. Our markets depend on the community’s support, especially during festive times like Eid-ul-Adha.”

He further emphasized the cultural importance of the marketplace in Kashmir, where shopping for Eid is traditionally a communal activity. “The vibrancy of our markets is a reflection of our culture and community spirit. By shopping locally, we not only support our traders but also preserve our cultural heritage.”
