Top militant commander trapped in Awantipora; two others killed in Khrew encounter

Srinagar: Two militants were killed in one of the multiple encounters that broke out in Awantipora area of Pulwama, police said on Wednesday.

On its official Twitter handle, J&K police said that one militant had been killed in the ongoing encounter at Sarshali, Khrew area in Awantipora.

“Update. In the ongoing encounter at Sarshali, #Khrew, #Awantipur One terrorist killed so far. Details shall follow,” read the tweet.

Later reports from the area said that another militant was killed in the gunfight.

Quoting a senior police official, news agency Kashmir News Observer said that two militants have been killed adding that operation is still on.

He said that operation which was halted during night resumed on Wednesday morning “after evacuation of all civilians to safer places.”

Parallel to it, there is another encounter going in Beighpora area of Awantipora in which a top militant commander is believed to the trapped, police said.

“Contact established in #Beighpora #Awantipur. Top terrorist commander is trapped. Exchange of fire on. Details shall follow,” police said in another tweet.

Sources said that in Beighpora encounter, a joint team of 55 RR, CRPF and Awantipora Police launched cordon and search operation in the area.

They said a top Hizb commander is believed to be trapped and operation was under way when this report was filed.

Unconfirmed reports say Hizb’s Riyaz Naikoo could be the trapped militant, however, the same could not be independently verified.

Police, in fact, asked news channels to desist from “speculative reporting.”

“Operation at Beigpora Awantipur is going on. Any Speculative reporting unconfirmed stuff having law and order bearings is highly irresponsible on the part of some channels. They are advised to hold their guns please,” the J&K police tweeted.
