Srinagar man gets two years in jail for cheating Thai woman

Srinagar, July 2: A local court here on Monday sentenced a man from Harwan Srinagar to two years in jail for ‘cheating’ on a complaint by a foreigner from Thailand whom he had “promised to marry”.

Sub Judge Forest Magistrate M R Chak, however, acquitted mother and sister of the man—Mohsin Shah, a resident of Brane Nishat near water works department Srinagar.

After convicted Moshin under section 420 RPC, observing that prosecution has proved its case as against Moshin Shah by leading cogent evidence.

“Moshin Shah is convicted and sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for a period of two years and rest o the accused (Mst Rubeena and Ms Mahoor) are acquitted of the charges under section 420 and 109 RPC for want of evidence.”

According to GNS, the trial against Mohsin and others culminated on a charge sheet filed by police against them on a written complaint lodged by the complainant namely Sarawit Patara Chokchai of Thailand, presently stating in Germany. She was staying at Shining Star Guest House, Dalgate Srinagar.

In the complaint, she stated she came to Kashmir in 2007 and stayed in the House Boat of Aslam Dangola, who took her to Shaw Art Place where she met one Mushtaq, a salesman and both of them took her to Lalchowk in a car. Mohsin boarded the car and she was travelling in who interacted with her and enquired about her next day’s programme.

She stated that she told him that she wanted to see some gardens upon which Moshin said he will accompany her and show her some beautiful gardens. Later, she said, Moshin took her and Aslam Dogola to his showroom where they stayed for about four hours. The accused Moshin told her that he will show her some gardens and on the next day he came to pick up her at 4 O’clock and took her to his home and introduced her to his parents and sister. She said all of them treated her well. After that Moshin took her in a Shikara and told her that he is a bachelor and both of them stayed in House Boat for two days and took some photographs and then he dropped her at Airport for one way journey to New Delhi.

Moshin, she said, tricked her to purchase a second-hand car in his name and also cheated her to construct a home here, which Moshin told her that it will be later transferred in her name, besides he managed to extract a huge amount from her on one pretext or the other.

At New Delhi, she said that she met some travel agent who told her Moshin was married and that property cannot be purchased by the foreigner in Kashmir. Later she filed the complaint with police.

The prosecution was represented before the court by PO, Shahista Zahoor.
