Srinagar: District Tiranga Center, Srinagar, has received over 1.5 lakh requisitions for national flags for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.

The authorities are expecting that over 2.5 lakh ‘tirangas’ will be hoisted during the Independence Day celebrations in the summer capital.

“The District Tiranga Centre has already received over 1.5 lakh requisitions from various departments and several private groups besides senior citizens and ex-servicemen are also approaching us for the national flags. We are providing another 60,000 to 70,000 flags.  It means we will provide 2.1 to 2.2 lakh flags. On top of that, others have procured flags on their own. If we go by a conservative estimate, over 2.5 lakh flags are being hoisted in Srinagar alone,” Tehsildar Headquarter Imtiyaz Naik told The Kashmir Monitor.

The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is a campaign under the aegis of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to hoist the national flag to mark the 75th year of India’s independence.

Naik said they had received a requisition of 98,000 flags from the Education Department alone and they had conducted several awareness programs in this regard.

“We received a requisition of 98,000 flags from the Education Department alone and we also have been conducting several programs to make ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ a grand success. We conducted programs in educational institutions and other places. We also provided information about competitions like selfies with tiranga,” he said.

Pertinently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called on the countrymen to take part in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga Movement’ and strengthen it. He had also called on the people to hoist the national flag in homes between August 13 and 15 this year to mark the completion of 75 years of Independence, being celebrated as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

Meanwhile, the Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party too is conducting several programmes in connection with the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme.

BJP J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur said their office was ‘flooded with people to obtain the national flag.

“BJP’s Kashmir office is flooded with people, taking flags on their own. Har Ghar Tiranga has become a passion given the overwhelming response from people at the district level across Kashmir. A huge response is a big slap on the face of those who opposed the move. Time is not far when none other than the people of Kashmir will hoist Tiranga atop houses of those who claimed no one will hold tricolor if article 370 was rolled back,” he said.
