Over the past five years, milk production in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has seen an impressive surge, growing from 25 lakh metric tonnes to 45 lakh metric tonnes. The dairy sector’s expansion is a result of a combination of government initiatives, modernisation of farming practices and a growing entrepreneurial spirit among the youth, all contributing to the region’s agricultural growth. One of the key indicators of this growth is the increase in daily milk collection and chilling capacity, which has jumped from 2 lakh litres per day (LLPD) to 8.5 lakh LLPD. This enhancement in milk processing capabilities is a direct result of improved infrastructure and modernisation of dairy farming practices. Government initiatives have been instrumental in driving this growth. By focusing on improving livestock quality, providing financial assistance, and encouraging the adoption of modern technology, the government has created a conducive environment for dairy farmers and cooperatives to thrive. These efforts have led to increased milk output, improved animal husbandry practices, and greater access to markets. The introduction of programmes like the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) has been particularly impactful. HADP aims to enhance milk productivity through artificial insemination (AI), providing indirect benefits to approximately 700,000 dairy farmers while also improving the quality of low-yielding and non-descript dairy animals. Moreover, the entrepreneurial spirit in the dairy sector has blossomed, with more educated young people viewing dairy farming as a viable and rewarding career option. This shift in perception is crucial for sustaining long-term growth in the industry. The involvement of the younger generation brings fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to traditional farming practices, contributing to the overall modernisation and efficiency of the sector. As the sector continues to modernise and expand, it is essential to maintain this momentum by ensuring that government support remains consistent and that young entrepreneurs are encouraged to innovate. Furthermore, the success of programmes like HADP highlights the importance of a holistic approach to agricultural development. However, to ensure the consistent availability of high-quality milk, the government must implement stringent quality control measures and regular inspections of local dealers and milkmen. Establishing a robust framework for monitoring and regulating milk production and distribution is essential. This can be achieved by enforcing standards for milk purity, hygiene, and safety, and by requiring all milk suppliers to adhere to these regulations. The government should also introduce routine inspections and random testing of milk samples from various sources to detect any adulteration or contamination. This would not only protect consumers but also promote trust in locally produced dairy products. Additionally, providing training and resources to local dairy farmers and milkmen on best practices in milk handling, storage, and transportation can further enhance the quality of milk. Ensuring transparency in the supply chain, combined with strict penalties for violations, will encourage compliance and help maintain the high standards necessary for the health and well-being of the population. With continued support, innovation, and a focus on quality, this progress can be sustained and further enhanced.
