A sub-inspector with Pune Police who became a millionaire by winning Rs 1.5 crore in the online game Dream11, has been suspended by the authorities. Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad Police took action against him on charges of misconduct and tarnishing the image of the police department.
The sub-inspector, Somnath Jhende, won a hefty amount in the popular online game Dream11 and the word spread quickly, prompting action from the police department. After word of mouth and concerns about his conduct, Pimpri-Chinchwad police ordered an investigation into the matter.
An investigation revealed that Jhende had played the online game without permission and had reportedly given media interviews wearing his police uniform. Subsequently, he was suspended from duty.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Swapna Gore, who led the investigation, stated, “After the investigation, it was found that he played the Dream11 game without permission, leading to his suspension. This serves as a reminder to other police personnel that they should refrain from playing online games in a similar manner, as they too could face disciplinary action.”
Jhende will now present his statement in the departmental investigation, the police said.
