Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Ukraine, the Ministry on External Affairs confirmed on August 19, his first trip to the country after it was invaded by Russia two years ago and over a month after he met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Details of the trip would be shared later in the day, the ministry said even as reports claimed that Modi would likely visit Kyiv this month itself as he is expected in neighbouring Poland on August 21 and 22.

Ukraine’s recent incursion in Russia’s Kursk region has taken the world by surprise, with Kyiv claiming it would force Moscow  to consider talks for a ceasefire.

Modi travelled to Russia on July 8 for summit talks with Putin. He expressed his eagerness to strengthen the bilateral partnership and emphasised that stronger India-Russia ties would greatly benefit their citizens. He also highlighted India’s commitment to playing a supportive role in regional peace and stability.

Despite the Ukraine conflict, New Delhi has maintained momentum in its “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia, advocating conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

Modi visit to Poland would be the first by an Indian PM in 40 years after Morarji Desai visited the country in 1979. In Warsaw, Modi will hold bilateral talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The focus would be on defence and strategic alignment.
