MoHUA survey 2019: At rank 357, Srinagar among cities with poorest sanitation in India

Srinagar, Mar 11: Srinagar is one of the poorest in sanitation across India as the city features among the bottom performers of the 2019 Swacch Survekshan survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The city is placed at 357th rank in the list of 500 most cleanest or sanitised cities in India.
The cleaning components of Srinagar, the survey says, have plunged by 116 points in the last two years. The city was ranked 241 in 2017.
Ironically, all its 35 wards have been declared unclean even when compared to the densely populated cities of India.
Twenty eight ranks ahead, Jammu is relatively cleaner than Srinagar.
The survey, which covered the entire India, was digitally completed in the month of January.
The data, as per MoHUA, was collected from four different sources: citizen feedback, direct observation, service level progress and certification for garbage and open defecation free cities.
Indore has been adjudged India’s cleanest city for the third straight year in the central government’s cleanliness survey.
Bhopal is India’s cleanest capital/UT city and Ujjain is India’s cleanest medium city (population 3-10 lakh).
As per data by Srinagar Development Authority (SDA), nearly 450 metric tonnes of solid waste is produced in Srinagar every day.
Another report by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report estimates that nearly 62 percent of this waste generated per day is organic in nature while the remaining is inorganic including seven percent of plastic waste.
The summer capital has only 575 garbage collection points, 110 dumpers, 500 handcarts and 1000-wheel barrows.
Nearly 80 trucks dump waste on daily basis in Achan dumping site, spread over 65 acres on the city outskirts.
SDA has predicted that 3,604 tonnes of waste per day will be generated in the city by 2021.
