LS Elections: Baramulla Sees 21% Turnout in First Four Hours

SRINAGAR: Over 21.30 percent of the 17.37 lakh electorate cast their votes in the first four hours of polling in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency on Monday, officials reported.

An election department official stated that polling was proceeding smoothly across the constituency, which includes 18 assembly segments spanning the districts of Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, and Budgam.

Providing assembly segment-wise turnout data, officials noted that the Langate segment in Kupwara district recorded the highest turnout of 24.21 percent till 1 pm.

Segments such as Bandipora, Beerwah, Budgam, Gulmarg, Handwara, Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Pattan, Rafiabad, Sonawari, Trehgam, Uri, and Wagoor-Kreeri reported more than 20 percent turnout, while Baramulla and Gurez were below 20 percent. Sopore recorded the lowest turnout at 11.75 percent.

Key candidates in the fray include National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, People’s Conference president Sajad Gani Lone, and jailed Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid.

Polling will close at 6 pm in the constituency, which saw a turnout of nearly 35 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
