The Ilizarov technique, a Russian orthopedic method pioneered at the Bone and Joint Hospital in Srinagar, has been a remarkable breakthrough for orthopedic patients, breathing new life into those who had previously lost hope of successful treatment.
Numerous patients who have come from places as far as Delhi and Chandigarh have found successful treatment and healing at B&J Hospital in Srinagar.
One individual, who had sustained a leg fracture during his childhood, shared his story. He had received extensive local and out-of-state treatments, but his condition worsened over the years. For nearly 25 years, he remained disabled and unable to walk.
His hope was restored when he visited B&J Hospital in Srinagar, where he met Dr. Altaf. Dr. Altaf offered advice, urging him to be patient. Under Dr. Altaf’s care, his life took a turn for the better, and he regained approximately 95% of his mobility, allowing him to perform everyday tasks.
Another patient from DH Pora in Kulgam had fractured his leg during childhood. Due to infection, one of his leg bones had to be removed. He sought treatment in Delhi for two years, but no improvement was seen. His affected leg was approximately 9 inches shorter than the other, making it difficult for him to walk without support.
Desperate for a solution, he sought help at B&J Hospital, where Dr. Altaf noticed his condition. Dr. Altaf assured him that he could lengthen the shorter leg and address associated deformities, giving him hope he had long abandoned. After two years of treatment, his leg was only an inch shorter than the other, and he was able to walk without any support, thanks to Dr. Altaf’s expertise.
Parents of children from the Pahalgam area also shared their experiences, where their children had conditions like feet pointing backward. These children were successfully treated by Dr. Altaf Kawoosa at B&J Hospital in Srinagar. One foot is now 100% fit, and the other has recovered 80%, with further improvements expected.
Many other patients have arrived from various states, having received treatments elsewhere for prolonged periods with limited success. They have found respite and healing through the Ilizarov technique performed at the Bone and Joint Hospital. Over 1300 patients with severe deformities caused by fractures, non-unions, congenital anomalies like challenging club feet, neglected congenital dislocations, cerebral palsy, and poliomyelitis have been successfully treated at this hospital.
The Ilizarov technique involves the application of an orthopedic external fixator to reconstruct, reshape, or lengthen bones, primarily those of the limb. This surgical treatment employs wires passed through an incision into the affected bone and attached to a stabilizing frame encircling the afflicted limb.
In challenging cases that do not respond to traditional reconstruction techniques, the Ilizarov surgery, which employs a specialized device known as the ‘Ilizarov apparatus’ or ‘Ilizarov fixator,’ has proven to be highly effective.
