LD hospital episode: Probe finds doc did not follow SOP

Srinagar, Jan 21: The doctor on duty at Lal Ded hospital here did not follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) by not admitting the patient, concluded the report of the inquiry committee that was formed to probe the recent incident in which a pregnant woman from Kupwara was forced to deliver her baby on the road last Thursday.

The baby died soon after.

The four member inquiry was led by Dr Farhat Jabeen and included Dr Masrat Rasool, Dr Shaira Wani, and Dr Nighat Firdous.
“The doctor with her clinical assessment/USG findings did not anticipate the precipitate delivery in her, although unfortunately the doctor on duty went against the SOP for referrals by not admitting the patient,” report concludes.

The report was prepared by the Postgraduate department of gynecology and obstetrics of Government Medical College Srinagar.

The incident took place last Thursday when woman from remote Moore village of Kalaroos area of Kupwara was referred to Lal Ded hospital.

Family said that the woman was kept under observation for a few hours at Lal Ded, after which the doctors allegedly refused her an overnight stay at the hospital.“We were told to leave the hospital. A doctor also misbehaved with us. After we left the hospital, she developed severe pain again and delivered a baby girl on the road. The new-born died immediately,” the family member accompanying the woman was quoted saying by media reports.
