Jmu prof suspended for referring Bhagat Singh as ‘terrorist’

Srinagar, Nov 30: A Jammu University professor on Friday was suspended by the University authorities for allegedlyusing terrorist remark for Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, the charge he denied.

“Following the complaint by some students against Prof. Mohammad Tajuddin, Dept of Political Science on 29th Nov 2018, the University on the same day constituted an Inquiry Committee, which is headed by Dean Academic Affairs of the University,” said Dr VinayThusoo, in charge, Media Jammu University.

Thusoosaid the committee has been asked to submit its report within seven days. “Prof Tajuddin has been disassociated from the teaching in the University with immediate effect till further orders,” he added.

The incident came to light after a video clip of the episode recorded by a student went viral on the social media on Thursday.

In their complaint to the Vice Chancellor, students alleged that the professor had hurt their sentiments by describing Bhagat Singh as a “terrorist” and demanded a strict action against him.

However, Prof Tajuddin has said he had no intention to hurt anyone’s feelings and has extended his apology for the matter.

“Today, I was teaching the biography of Vladimir Lenin in the classroom and was explaining to students how he was referred to as a terrorist by the czars. Then I explained how the state had referred to Bhagat Singh as a terrorist. I had no intention to demean the personality of Bhagat Singh or for that matter hurt anyone’s feelings. If it has happened, I am sorry,” the professor was quoted as having said to the media.
