Independence Day: Multi-tier security put in place to ensure peaceful celebrations

Srinagar, Aug 13: A multi-tier security has been put in place to ensure incident-free Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir.

A full dress rehearsal was held on Tuesday at the Bakshi Stadium where Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi took the salute at the march past.

Contingents of police, security forces, and school children took part in the parade,

“We have made foolproof security arrangements for Independence Day celebrations. We keep all possibilities in mind while drafting a security plan to ensure that everything remains peaceful,” Birdi told reporters here after the full dress rehearsal.

The IGP said a multi-tier security set has been put in place at Bakshi stadium, the venue of the main Independence Day function in Jammu and Kashmir, while regulatory barricades have been established at several places as part of the security drill.

He said the police are aware of the recent terror activities and keeping it in mind, a “compact security plan” has been framed for the smooth conduct of August 15.

“We are aware of recent terror activities. There is an ongoing operation in Kokernag. So we have laid a multi-layer security grid for smooth functions on August 15 across Kashmir,” he said after taking stock of the full-dress rehearsal at the main venue.

LG Manoj Sinha will unfurl the tri-color at Bakshi Stadium while one of his advisors will take the salute of the parade in Jammu.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, V K Bhiduri said the enthusiasm among the general populace was high ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

“There is no need for special permission to witness the Independence Day function at Bakshi Stadium. Everyone is welcome and the entry is free,” Bhiduri said.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Bhiduri said school children and others showed great enthusiasm and locals are ready to join the event in large numbers. “I urge the people to come early and be seated. Those having smoking habits need to keep cigarette packets at home for some time and enjoy the great event,” he said, adding that there was an open invitation to all.

After the parade, artists and school kids performed in a cultural program highlighting the diversity of Jammu and Kashmir.
