SRINAGAR, MARCH 14: Prominent religious scholar Ghulam Rasool Hami has condemned the increasing trend of religious debates on social media, where self-proclaimed preachers engage in disputes for personal gain.
He alleged that some individuals exploit religious issues for likes, views, and monetary benefits from platforms like YouTube and Facebook, rather than engaging in meaningful or scholarly discussions.
Hami emphasized that genuine Ulema do not engage in public conflicts on social media but resolve differences with dignity, following the principles of Adab (respect), Shariah, and morality.
He urged the community to focus on unity and resist divisive narratives instead of indulging in unnecessary conflicts. He also called on senior scholars and religious leaders to take responsibility and educate the public about those who misuse religious discourse for personal or political agendas.
Warning against individuals who prioritize financial gains over religious integrity, Hami cautioned the public to be wary of those using social media for self-promotion rather than genuine guidance.
Addressing the detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, he urged authorities to allow him to deliver the Friday sermon. “The government should allow him to fulfill his religious duty. People are waiting to hear him,” he stated. (KNS)
