Srinagar, Mar 28: Gusty winds left a trail of destruction across Kashmir on Friday night
Several areas reported incidents of property damage, while authorities rushed to assess the impact and begin restoration efforts.
Reports said in Srinagar city, strong winds led to complete destruction of a vehicle near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) Srinagar.
Witnesses reported the vehicles were severely damaged as debris fell on them due to the storm. Also, several electric cables were snapped, raising concerns over power disruptions.
Additionally, the electricity supply was affected in multiple areas, with officials working to restore services.
Moreover, in Habbak Srinagar, a rooftop collapsed because of high-tension (HT) power lines, falling on it, causing further disruptions.
Officials from Fire and Emergency Services said the firefighters immediately reached the spot to assess the damage and initiate relief operations.
Notably, in Ganderbal strong winds hit the area. Residents also witnessed high-speed waves causing damage to rooftops and outdoor structures.
Pertinently, administration and emergency response teams are on high alert to handle any further damages or disruptions caused by the ongoing weather conditions. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and take precautions as strong winds persist in some areas.
Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecasted light rain and thunderstorms at isolated places on March 28.
The region will experience strong surface winds ranging between 60-70 kmph in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions, expected to persist until the afternoon or late afternoon today.
According to the forecast, weather conditions will remain generally dry from March 29 to 31, extending into the first week of April, with no major precipitation expected between April 1 and April 6.
The MeT department has issued an advisory urging travelers, tourists, and transporters to adhere to administrative and traffic guidelines due to strong winds. Farmers have been advised to resume their agricultural activities after today’s weather disturbance.
For public safety, authorities have cautioned against outdoor activities during the peak wind hours, advising residents and tourists to stay indoors, avoid boating and Shikara rides, and refrain from standing near weak structures or electric wires.
The latest update from the Met Centre Srinagar suggests an overall improvement in weather conditions after today’s brief spell of rain and wind. However, people are advised to remain cautious until the strong winds subside.
