In this age of technology and smartphones, parents have to be doubly careful about how their children, especially those in their pre-teens and teens are using social media sites.

In an incident that further exacerbates the need of exercising caution while being online, a 14 year old girl was blackmailed by a 20-year-old youth she had met on Facebook a few months ago.

The girl from Odisha’s Bhubaneswar was first fooled into a relationship by the youth who then clicked her obscene videos and photos. The boy then used them to blackmail the girl.

The accused Asish Jena, a college dropout and a resident of Bhuban Town in Dhenkanal district met the girl on Facebook a few months back.

Asish has clicked some obscene photos and videos of the minor girl on his mobile phone and later started blackmailing her. He demanded her money and threatened her saying that if she fails to pay the money he will upload her private videos and pictures on social media, said a senior police officer as per reports.

Though she pleaded with him to spare her and not defame her, he continued the threatening. Without any other option, she agreed to his demands. The girl allegedly started stealing cash from her home and gave it to Jena. After getting around Rs 1.5 lakh in phases, Jena demanded more money from her. The girl then started stealing her mother’s gold ornaments and handed them over to the blackmailer, added police.

Even after taking the cash and gold ornaments from the girl, when Asish did not delete the videos and photos from his mobile phone and keep on blackmailing her, she informed the matter to her parents. Later, the parents of the victim approached the Nayapalli Police for help.

The Nayapalli arrested the boy and recovered the cash and other valuables from his possession.
