Four militants killed in twin gunfights

Srinagar, Mar 28: Four militants were on Thursday killed in two encounters with security forces in Shopian and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

In Shopian, three militants were killed in a gun fight between militants and security forces, the Army said.

The gun fight raged between militants and a joint team of security forces in Keller area of Shopian district in the wee hours of Thursday.

Security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in Yawran forests in Shopian following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesman said.

He said in the ensuing gunfight, three militants were killed.

“The slain militants were identified as Sajad Khanday, Aqib Ahmad Dar and Basharat Ahmad Mir, all residents of Pulwama,” the spokesman said.

“Incriminating materials, including three AK rifles, were recovered from the site of the encounter. All these materials have been taken in the case records for further investigation and to probe the trio’s complicity in other terror cases,” he said.

In another encounter, a militant was killed in a gunfight in Yaroo area of Langate in Handwara.

A police official said that after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a search operation was launched.

The militants fired upon the search party leading to an encounter that resulted in the killing of a militant. He identified the slain militant as Danish Ahmed Dar, a resident of Sopore.

The spokesman said that Danish belonged to the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militant outfit.

As per reports, as soon as the news of killing of three militants spread in Pulwama district, locals came on roads and started throwing stones on the government forces who retaliated with tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse youth amid spontaneous shutdown.

A complete shutdown was observed in Shopian as well as Pulwama districts against these killings. Mobile Internet services had been suspended in both the districts.

Militant arrested in Bijbehara: Police

Srinagar, Mar 28: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a militant of Hizb ul Mujahideen from Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

A police spokesman said that the police and the forces arrested a militant following a “credible” input. He said the militant, namely, Rameez Ahmad Dar of Kulgam district was active from past one-and-a-half-year.

 He is affiliated with proscribed outfit HM, said the spokesman. “Arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession,” he added.
