Five of family die in Doda landslide

Srinagar, Sep 24: A massive landslide buried a mud house (dhoka) in Galli-Bhatoli area of tehsil Chilli-Pingal in Bhalessa area of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, leaving five occupants dead.

A police official said that a mud house belonging to a tribal man Moor Muhammad was buried under heaps of mud and debris following a landslide Monday morning.

Five persons and dozens of sheep and bovines died in the incident, said ASP Bhadarwah Rajinder Singh.

“Galli-Bhatoli is a far off area located on a slope of a hill 20 km from Gandoh. As soon we received a phone call regarding the incident, a police party along with sleuths of 4RR rushed to the spot and joined locals in rescue operation to retrieve inmates from the huge mound of earth and debris,” he said.

Singh said that bodies of five persons, including a minor, have so far been retrieved from the site.

The area has been witnessing heavy rains for past few days.

The deceased were identified as Bashir Ahmed, 25, Nagina Begum, 22, Zulfi(girl) 5th class student, Mohd Sharief, 7 and a year-old girl child.
