New Delhi: National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), have asked the authorities to remain on high in wake of a rapid spurt in monkeypox cases in different countries
Authorities have been asked to send samples of symptomatic travelers to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further investigation.
What is Monkeypox?
According to WHO, monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis with incidental human infections that usually occur in forested parts of Central and West Africa. It is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus family.
There are two main strains of the virus.
1. Congo strain
2. West African strain.
Congo strain is more severe when compared to the other one. It has a mortality rate of 10 percent.
What are the symptoms?
1. Fever
2. Distinctive bumpy rash
How does it spread?
The virus which was first found in monkeys in 1958 can spread between humans through close contact. It can be caught from a bite by an infected animal, by touching its blood, body fluids, or fur.
Which countries are most affected?
Monkeypox cases are rapidly increasing in Europe, and North America.
Cases have been confirmed in Europe in the United Kingdom, Spain Portugal, Germany, and Italy. United States, Canada, and Australia have also reported cases.
