ECI approves appointment of Nalin Prabhat as DG, operations & security

Srinagar, Aug 28: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday approved the appointment of senior IPS officer Nalin Prabhat as Director General (operations and security) till September 30 and the shifting of four district police chiefs.

Sources told a local news agency that the poll body today approved the appointment of Nalin Prabhat, as DG (operations & security), J&K police till Sept 30. Prabhat, who was recently brought to the AGMUT cadre, would take over as police chief of J&K on September 30 when RR Swain would complete his innings.

They disclosed that the poll body has also approved the extension of the inter-cadre deputation tenure of Syeed Fakhruddin Hamid, DC Anantnag, for 2 years.

The commission has also approved the proposal of relieving Ashish Mishra, SSP Srinagar, and transfer of SSP Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, SP Handwara, Dawood Ayoub and SSP Kupwara Shobhit Saxena.

The Commission has directed the J&K administration to provide a panel of IPS officers for the post of SP/SSP Srinagar, Baramulla, Handwara, and Kupwara by 5 pm tomorrow

On August 15,  Nalin Prabhat was appointed Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police.

A 1992 batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh Cadre, he will take over as J&K DGP after the retirement of incumbent RR Swain on October 1. Till then he has been posted as Special Director General of Police.

“Consequent upon joining the AGMUT cadre on inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh cadre. Nalin Prabhat is hereby posted to Jammu and Kashmir as Special Director General till September 30. Further upon the retirement of RR Swain on September 9, Nalin Prabhat is appointed as DCP Jammu and Kashmir till further orders,” NHA said in the order

An alumnus of the prestigious St. Stephen’s College, Prabhat has won several gallantry awards for fighting terrorists and naxals across the country.

On Wednesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet curtailed the tenure of Nalin Prabhat, as Director General of, the National Security Guard (NSG). Sanction has also been given to inter-cadre deputation Nalin Prabhat from Andhra Pradesh to AGMUT Cadre, initially for three years.

A no-nonsense officer with strategic and tactical acumen in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism, Prabhat had many stints in Kashmir as a part of CRPF after it replaced BSF in Jammu and Kashmir,

Prabhat served CRPF as DIG, IG operations in Kashmir, and Additional Director General of Police. His stints were full of action as fidayeen terror had peaked in Kashmir. Besides the army and J&K Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG), CRPF was part of several operations. CRPF and J&K police were responsible for the law and order and anti-terror operations in urban areas of Srinagar while the army’s Rashtriya Riffles was responsible in villages, rural and areas along the Line of Control.
