Srinagar: A 10-year-old girl from Doda district, whose labourer father is stranded in Himachal Pradesh, was miraculously saved from drowning in a gushing nallah by a team of J&K police officials on Sunday.

The girl Iram, daughter of Shoukat Ali from Indaloo Khara area in Doda, was swept away by strong currents when she was trying to collect firewood on the banks of Kalguni nallah close to her home.

The girl was carried away by the water and was finally stuck on a rock in the middle of the nallah, with no one around to help her.

Fortunately a team of police officials headed by SDPO Gondoh Nawaz Khanday was patrolling the area and saw the girl.

The team immediately jumped in to rescue her.

“It was quite lucky of her that we were around. My driver Constable Imtiyaz, who is a good swimmer, was the one who has the built and the swimming skills to beat the currents. He jumped in and brought the girl to safety,” Khanday told The Kashmir Monitor.

Heavy rains for the last few days had raised the water level of the nallah and the young girl was stuck for almost an hour when the cops turned up as her saviours.

“Saving him was a great feeling. We are here to protect people and save people,” the SDPO said.
