Congress appoints GA Mir as CLP leader

Srinagar, Oct 15: Congress on Tuesday appointed senior leader G A Mir as the CLP leader.

As per an order, G A Mir was appointed as the new CLP leader of Jammu and Kashmir.

“This is to inform you that following the unanimous resolution of the members of the legislative assembly, Jammu & Kashmir, authorizing the Congress President to appoint a new CLP leader, the Congress president has appointed G A Mir as the new CLP leader of Jammu & Kashmir,” the order issued by K C Venugopal said

In the 90-member House,  NC won 42 of the 90 seats for which elections were held in three phases with the alliance partner Congress bagging six seats. Although the two parties have a majority in the 95-member House, four Independents and the lone AAP MLA have also extended their support to the NC.

On Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra said that the restoration of statehood, land rights, and job-related issues are more important than seeking ministerial positions in the upcoming Omar Abdullah-led government in the Union Territory.

“We have not yet discussed the distribution of ministerial berths with our alliance partner, the National Conference (NC). For us, the restoration of statehood, land rights, and addressing job-related issues take precedence over seeking ministerial positions in the new government in Jammu and Kashmir,” Karra told a local news agency.

He said that both Congress and the NC are part of the INDIA Alliance, which aims to end hate politics in the country.

When asked whether Rahul Gandhi would attend the oath-taking ceremony, he replied, “We are not sure, as it depends on his availability and schedule.”

The National Conference-Congress alliance contested the elections jointly, with the NC contesting 51 seats and Congress 32. The National Conference secured 42 seats, followed by the BJP with 29, Congress with 6, the JKPDP with 3, and the remaining seats going to smaller parties and independents.
