Srinagar, Nov 6: The water level of Jhelum has dropped to an all-time low in Kashmir.
Kashmir Weather, an independent forecaster, said the water level at Sangam dropped to minus 0.82 feet on Nov 6., which is the lowest ever recorded at the station.
At Pampore, the gauge reading was minus 1.75 meters. At Ram Munshi Bagh Srinagar, it was 1.28 feet and 1.15 feet at Asham.
Some tributaries of Jhelum were also flowing at a record low level.
The water level of Vishow Nallah at Khudwani was recorded at 2.31 m, minus 0.45 m of Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi & Lidder Nallah at Batkoot, 0.61 m of Doodhganga Nallah at Barzulla, and 0.02 m of Sindh Nallah at Doderhama.
Meanwhile, the forecast indicates that dry weather will continue to dominate during the next 5 days. A weak Western Disturbance, however, may impact Jammu and Kashmir around November 11.
The declining water levels are concerning as continued dry spell will lead to further drop in the water levels. Additionally, with falling temperatures, meltwater from snow and ice will decline sharply.
An independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif told the local news agency that current forecasts indicate the dry spell will likely persist until November 10.
“A weak Western Disturbance may begin to affect Jammu and Kashmir from the evening of November 10, bringing light rainfall in the plains and possible light to moderate snowfall over higher elevations,” he said.
“The forecast indicates the dry spell will continue in Jammu and Kashmir until November 10. Under this weak Western Disturbance, light rainfall is expected in the plains, while higher elevations in Kashmir may receive a light to moderate spell of snowfall. Snowfall is possible over Sinthan Top, Affarwat Gulmarg, Zojila Pass, Sadhna Top, Razdan Top, parts of Gurez, and other high-altitude areas,” he said.
