Cinematic Revival

The Kashmir valley, often referred to as ‘Paradise on Earth’, has once again become a prominent destination for filmmakers. Kashmir’s scenic beauty is again attracting lots of filmmakers with over 350 shooting permissions issued recently. This resurgence is not only a boon for the film industry but also for the local economy and tourism sector. The establishment of a Single Window System for processing film permissions has further streamlined this process. The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Conclave, held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), underscored the region’s potential as a premier film shooting destination. The government of Jammu and Kashmir has implemented several strategic initiatives to entice filmmakers. These include financial incentives, streamlined permission processes and the promotion of local talent. The new Jammu and Kashmir Film Policy, 2024, is a significant part of these efforts. It aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a filmmaker’s paradise by leveraging its natural beauty and cultural richness. A panel discussion on ‘Film Tourism and its potential in promoting J&K Tourism’ featured prominent Bollywood filmmakers and writers such as Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bharadwaj, Kabir Khan and actor Sanjay Suri among others. The discussion highlighted the potential of the Kashmir Valley for film shooting and its prospects for promoting tourism and boosting local economies. Kabir Khan, known for directing movies like “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” and “Ek Tha Tiger,” noted the ease of shooting in Kashmir due to the cooperation and understanding of the local people. He emphasized that the local community’s support makes a significant difference in the filmmaking process. The support of the local population is a crucial factor in the resurgence of film shootings in Kashmir. Kabir Khan mentioned that obtaining permissions in Kashmir is relatively easier compared to other parts of the country. He praised the local people’s understanding and cooperation, which greatly facilitates the shooting process. This sentiment was echoed by other filmmakers, who highlighted how the local community’s assistance and respect for the filmmakers’ needs contribute to a smooth shooting experience. The scenic beauty and cultural heritage of Kashmir have always been a significant draw for filmmakers. The region’s stunning landscapes have been immortalized in numerous iconic films since the 1960s and 70s. Classics like ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ and ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ showcased the Valley’s breathtaking beauty, making it a beloved destination for filmmakers. However, political unrest and security issues led to a decline in film shoots in the area for several decades. This hiatus marked a period where Bollywood largely avoided the region, opting for safer locations. The return of film shootings in Kashmir is part of a larger resurgence of Bollywood’s presence in the Valley. This revival is supported by the new film policy and strategic initiatives by the government. The Jammu and Kashmir Film Policy, 2024, offers financial incentives and promotes local talent to boost the film industry. The policy intends to attract both domestic and international film producers with an aim to position J&K as an ideal filming location.
