Srinagar: An encounter rages on between militants and armed forces in Kreeri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district hours after an attack in which two CRPF personnel and a policeman were killed in the area.

A joint team of Army, CRPF and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a Cordon and Search Operation in outskirts of Baramulla soon after the attack on forces party.

While chasing the militants, a joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering an encounter, officials said.

They said that contact with hiding militants has been established and firing from both sides is on, adding that two militants have been killed in the gunfight while the operation is going on.

Till this report was being filed, intermittent firing was going on.

As reported earlier, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants came from the orchards and targeted a joint naka party of police and CRPF at Kreeri area Monday morning resulting in the killing of two CRPF men and a special police officer (SPO).

“After checking the statements of eye-witnesses and other technical details, it seems Lashkar men who were three in number carried out the attack near a shallow stream where a joint team was on a normal naka duty,” the IGP told reporters at the site of incident.

He said that police are “developing the leads and the attackers will soon be neutralized.” (With inputs from KNO)
