Srinagar, Aug 21: Authorities have intensified monitoring of social media platforms to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

The move comes in response to growing concerns about the potential misuse of digital platforms to disrupt public order or influence voters through the spread of misinformation.

Senior officials from the Cyber Police told a local news agency that their teams are already actively patrolling various social media platforms.

The goal is to detect and intercept any content that could incite unrest, manipulate public opinion, or otherwise interfere with the integrity of the upcoming elections.

“Our cyber police units are fully prepared and will continue to monitor social media platforms rigorously. We are committed to identifying and stopping any attempts to post content that could stir trouble during the elections,” a senior police official stated, emphasizing the importance of preventing malicious actors from exploiting social media to destabilize the region.

Authorities have underlined a zero-tolerance policy towards the dissemination of misleading information, hate speech, or posts that could heighten tensions. They warned that any content deemed harmful to the electoral process or public safety would be swiftly dealt with. This comprehensive strategy aims to preemptively curb the misuse of digital platforms, particularly in a politically sensitive environment like Jammu and Kashmir.

“We will not allow anyone to use social media as a tool to spread false information or create panic. The integrity of the electoral process and public order is our top priority,” the official added.

In recent years, social media has played an increasingly significant role in shaping public discourse, especially during elections. However, it has also become a tool for misinformation and propaganda. Aware of this dual-edged nature, law enforcement agencies are stepping up their digital vigilance, hoping to prevent the platform from being weaponized against democracy.

“The heightened cyber vigilance is just one component of a broader security framework being implemented to ensure a smooth and secure election process.

Alongside these digital efforts, authorities have introduced a range of other security measures, including increased patrols and closer coordination between local and national agencies” sources said.

Authorities hope these efforts will help uphold the principles of democracy, ensuring that the elections are not only free and fair but also secure from external disruptions and internal unrest.  (With KINS inputs)
